Jellyfish!!

For this project we explored the deep sea where the jellyfish, turtles, sharks and other sea creatues live!!  My son had a week where he was interested in turtles so we found a documentary of a turtle's journey through his life in the ocean.  In the documentary there are these beautiful jellyfish that gave me an idea for a project.

The first few pictures are the example I made and one Kyle did at home.
Materials:
Paper Plates
Strips of Tissue Paper
Ribbon ( I used a variety of different ribbons, some sparkly, and one i found looked like a pearl necklace)
Glitter                                    Hole Puncher
Glue
Tape
Stapler
Tin Foil

This one on the right Kyle made- He painted a watercolor background and glued the jellyfish on.  The kids in the class didn't do the background.- We also glued on some tin foil for extra shine- but the kids in the class used glitter instead.

Introduction:   I started by showing the children pictures of jellyfish and talking about them.

Directions:
Preparation- First I punched a bunch of holes all the way around a paper plate and mixed up some glue and a little water in a dish for each child.  Then I cut strips of colorful tissue paper and about 6-8 pieces of ribbon for each child.

(1).  To get started the children attached the ribbons around the edge of the plate to be the jellyfish tentacles.  They threaded them through the holes and taped them on the back with masking tape.  (for older children I might have them tie the ribbon, but this was easier for the little ones.)
(2). When the tentacles were finished I tied a string on the top so it could hang, then we moved on to decorating the surface of the jellyfish body.  They used a sponge brush to spread the glue mixture onto the plate, and then layered the strips of tissue on and then put more glue over the top. They continued unto the whole front of the plate was covered.

(3).  Then we sprinkled a bit of glitter onto the wet glue go give the jellyfish some more sparkle!

(4) The last step was to add another paper plate on the back that can be stapled or taped. This will hide all the tape on the inside.

The finished products turned out beautifully!!  The kids really enjoyed swinging their jellyfish around through the air.
