Wayne Theibaud- Pop Art Ice Cream Cones
In this project we learned about Pop Art and the artist Wayne Theibaud. During the Pop Art movement artists work was inspired
by popular culture- so the subjects in their work focused on turning
thing from ordinary life- food, music, TV into bold artistic
statements.
Students used a variety of materials to create Pop Art Ice Cream Cones!
Materials:
*Heavy White drawing paper
*Watercolor Paints and Brushes
*Construction paper
*Shaving Cream
*Glue
*Sprinkles
*Marshmellow
This was such a fun project, who doesn't get excited about Ice Cream!!?
To begin, I introduced the students to Wayne Thiebaud and showed them some of his artwork.
f
Steps:
1. First, the students used watercolors to create a background, I did not give them many limitations I told them they could do whatever they wanted and gave them some suggestions. They could make designs with different patterns, colors and lines, create a table, or any other background they wanted their ice cream cones in.
2. Next the children glued 4 yellow triangles across the bottom of the paper (horizontal)
3. Then they used small, torn pieces of construction paper to create the scoops of ice cream. I demonstrated this, emphasizing layering the pieces so that there would be no white space in between.
4. Once they finished the ice cream scoops I gave them shaving cream mixed with glue to to make whipped cream on top of each ice cream cone! They used a spoon to apply the "whipped cream". This part was a big hit- the kids loved it, and it looked just like whipped cream!
5. Next I gave them sprinkles and marshmallows to add to the whipped cream. And some foam circle stickers to add to the top- to look like a cherry!
6. And the last thing I told the kids to do was to add some brown lines on the cone to make it look like a waffle cone!
* This on on the left is an example I made.
